Welcome for New RVI Urgent Treatment Centre
After visiting the new Urgent Treatment Centre, Cllr Pauline Allen is welcomes this addition to health care in Newcastle
Pauline Allen, Robin Ashby and Christine Morrissey are the elected councillors for Parklands Ward on Newcastle City Council until the elections on 7th May. They work hard throughout the year to address local problems and issues, support community endeavours, and to ensure that the voices of Parklands' residents are heard in the Council Chamber and Committees.
Parklands Ward covers the north of Gosforth, either side of the Great North Road, from the Metro line to the A1, including North Gosforth Park, North Brunton, Melton Park, Brunton Park, Melbury and Warkworth Woods, Grange and Grange Park, Fencer Hill Park, Greystoke Park, Whitebridge Park, Halls Estate and Garden Village. In May, following changes made by the Local Government Boundary Commission, the name of the ward will change to Parklands and North Gosforth. Grange and Grange Park will become part of Fawdon and West Gosforth Ward.
The Liberal Democrats Focus Team has been serving this area since the mid-1970s, when John (now Lord) Shipley was first elected to the City Council. The Team has an unbroken record of listening to local people and keeping in touch through regular Focus newsletters ever since. In addition, the team now use this web page, eFocus and social media ( Facebook : Parklands Liberal Democrats Focus Team) to keep local people informed about what is happening across the ward. Our Focus and eFocus Editor is David Partington.
Pauline, Robin and Christine are also part of the 22 strong Liberal Democrats Official Opposition Group on Newcastle City Council, holding the current Labour administration to account and pressing for change to improve our area and the wider city.
Your Parklands Liberal Democrat Focus Team works all year to stand up for local residents, raise issues with the council, and get results for our community.
This report highlights just some of the work we have carried out over the past year.
PROTECTING GREEN SPACES AND TREES
Parklands is a green and attractive ward, and residents consistently tell us they want it protected.
Over the past year we have:
Pauline Allen:
“People choose to live in Parklands because of its green spaces. We will always stand up for residents when that character is under threat.”
ROADS, PAVEMENTS AND STREET LIGHTING
Residents regularly contact us about potholes, damaged pavements and poor lighting.
This year we have:
After more than 20 years of pressure, the council has now signed papers to adopt roads and street lighting on Melbury.
Robin Ashby:
“This shows what persistence can achieve. We kept pushing for years because residents deserved better — and now they finally have it.”
CLEANER STREETS AND BETTER BIN COLLECTIONS
Missed collections and fly-tipping remain a concern across Parklands.
We have:
Christine Morrissey:
“Residents are rightly frustrated when basic services fail. We raise these issues again and again until something is done.”
STANDING UP FOR RESIDENTS ON PLANNING
Planning decisions have a lasting impact on Parklands.
Over the year we have:
David Partington:
“Too often residents feel decisions are made without them. Our job is to make sure local voices are heard — and taken seriously.”
SAFER STREETS AND NEIGHBOURHOODS
Residents frequently raise concerns about speeding traffic, poor visibility and anti-social behaviour.
We have:
Robin Ashby:
“Feeling safe on your own street matters. We focus on the everyday issues that affect people’s lives.”
A STRONG LOCAL VOICE FOR PARKLANDS
We:
Pauline Allen:
“We work for Parklands every month of the year — not just at election time.”
WORKING WITH THE COMMUNITY
Each year Parklands Ward has funding available to support local organisations.
We have helped groups apply for ward grants supporting:
Christine Morrissey:
“These grants make a real difference locally, and we’re always happy to help groups apply.”
