Upgrade the Q3 Roads in Brunton Park
The Q3 service is a vital link for Brunton Park and Melbury, but local roads are struggling under the weight of heavy traffic and in urgent need of upgrading
Estate roads like Queensway and Princes Road were not designed to carry the volume and weight of traffic they now regularly experience. Modern buses — including the electric vehicles that are helping to reduce emissions across the city — are heavier than the vehicles these roads were built for, and the road surfaces are degrading badly as a result.
Following concerns expressed by local residents about the state of some road surfaces in Brunton Park, the Focus Team surveyed the route followed by the Q3 bus service and identified no fewer than 46 separate defects, including numerous potholes, depressions in the road surface, rippling, and extensive areas of structural damage.
By contrast, the Focus Team looked at other similar roads through Brunton Park and identified only three minor defects - highlighting the stark impact that heavy bus traffic is having on this particular route.
Commenting on their survey, Parklands & North Gosforth Focus Editor, David Partington said: “These issues clearly demonstrate that the Princes Road and Queensway are no longer fit for purpose and are incapable of supporting the volume and type of traffic that regularly use them. The road surface and substructure is rapidly deteriorating.
“In light of this evidence, we are calling on the Council to take urgent action and commit to a full reconstruction of the affected roads. Temporary repairs are no longer sufficient; a comprehensive redevelopment is required to ensure safety, reliability, and long-term usability.”
