Stop the Burn: Get Newcastle Recycling Again

Join the campaign to stop Newcastle City Council entering a 30 year contract to incinerate waste

Newcastle City Council is currently negotiating the procurement of a new waste incinerator on Teesside, known as TVERF, with 6 other Councils. The projected carbon emissions from TVERF would be the equivalent of 125,000 homes, and much more than the equivalent gas-fired power station in terms of the carbon intensity of the electricity it produces.

In recent years, Newcastle domestic waste recycling rate has plummeted from over 42% to less than 25%, compared to the best performing Councils which recycle more than 60%. According to Government figures, projected incinerator capacity will exceed the country’s requirement by 1.2 million tonnes per year by 2042.

Liberal Democrats councillors, led by Cllr Mike Cookson and Cllr Gareth Kane (pictured) are calling on the Council to withdraw from the contract negotiations for the incinerator and focus on recycling more of Newcastle's waste.
