Newcastle and Gateshead Councils have announced that work to renovate the Tyne Bridge will commence this year.

Cllr Pauline Allen, who sits on the Joint Bridges Committee, has been calling for years for the iconic Tyne Bridge to be repaired. Whilst she's pleased that the works will at long last be carried out soon, she has highlighted that the delays will mean that the work will now take longer and cost much more, because the extent of the work is much greater.

Pauline said: "The beautiful Grade II listed Tyne Bridge needs to be restored before its centenary in October 2028 for safety reasons and also to ensure it once again becomes a fitting icon for Tyneside. It is a landmark feature recognised around the world, but has been neglected for far too long on both sides of the Tyne. If the work had been done earlier, as I have been asking, then the work required and costs would have been much less."
