Redoubled support from Council needed as Newcastle moves into Tier 4 - Local Liberal Democrats slam mixed messages

'People have had mixed messages from the Government, and at times, the Council's political leadership, about the Coronavirus , which have raised expectations that things would get better more quickly. But restrictions during this festive period reveal the seriousness of the situation, and the Council needs to play its part now more than ever. We urge residents to stay safe and remember the basics of hands, face and space at all times,' says Cllr Nick Cott, Liberal Democrats Leader of the Opposition.

'The country is in the grip of a new wave of Coronavirus infection - particularly with a new strain of the disease - and we recognise the need to take action with additional measures. But we also note that in Newcastle the rate of infection has been reducing of late, although there is no guarantee that this trend will continue given rates in other nearby areas and across the country.

'We know that this Government decision to move us at a few hours' notice into Tier 4 restrictions will have further impacts on local businesses, so the Council needs to be redoubling efforts to offer support. The situation for our schools is also very difficult; they were already facing plans for staggered return of pupils and putting in place mass testing at short notice.

'Although the situation may slowly ease with vaccinations, and we urge everyone who is offered vaccination to accept, progress in local test and tracing remains an important priority for the Council and partners.

'We need to keep close watch on hospital admissions over the next few weeks. As ever, we extend our thanks to the key workers who keep us going during this crisis.'
