Newcastle moves toward top of national Highways league

Residents of Newcastle have told an independent national survey that they are increasingly satisfied with the condition of roads and pavements in the city. The city has come 4th out of 95 Councils surveyed, and 2nd out of 19 Metropolitan areas, moving up several places from the 2009 survey.

Cllr Wendy Taylor, Executive Member responsible for Environment, including local highways and transport, said: "This survey shows that we are continuing to move in the right direction in Newcastle. The city's roads and pavements were badly neglected for decades under Labour, but since we took control of the Council in 2004, we have transformed performance. There is still a long way to go to reverse this underinvestment, and the survey does show that we need to do better in a couple of areas, but overall this is a very positive survey. The Lib Dems continue to offer a better deal for city residents on the issues that matter to them, and at much better value for money too."
