Newcastle Liberal Democrats respond to “Zionism is Racism” motion

Newcastle Liberal Democrats are deeply troubled by the motion passed at the Green Party of England and Wales Conference. Whilst we recognise the right of other political parties to debate and determine their own policies, this motion will do little to reassure the local Jewish community, and we wish to put on record our rejection of it. Having spoken to local Green Party representatives, we acknowledge a range of opinions within their party on this sensitive topic. 

We do not agree with the motion’s attempt to deny Jewish people the right to define “Zionism” in their own terms, to define their own oppression, or to aspire to recognise their own history. The motion denies the right of Israelis to exist as Israelis. It also denies both Israelis and Palestinians the opportunity to work together to define their own shared end goal, and the legitimate rights and aspirations of many to live in peace, security and dignity. It is widely recognised that the only viable resolution to the conflict in Israel-Palestine is through the democratic and popular consent of both groups. 

Liberal Democrats have been consistent in utterly condemning the actions of both Hamas and the Government of Israel.  Neither the events of October 7th nor those that followed  justify attacks on Jews wherever and however they occur. There are no legitimate justifications for antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism, or discrimination against any community.  We continue to condemn war crimes wherever they occur and no matter who perpetrates them. 

Our responsibility as politicians is to seek not to inflame this situation further, and instead to provide assurance, safety and security to our communities in Newcastle, so that everyone can feel respected and valued. That is why we continue to call for all communities in Newcastle to work together to increase understanding.

We will stand against antisemitism wherever it rears its head. Newcastle is a proud city of black and white, and will remain a tolerant and inclusive city under our leadership.
