Making a difference for young people

17 Apr 2011

Liberal Democrats in Newcastle have helped to build a better future for our children. The council has gained over £250 million pounds of investment in new school buildings to help support our children in getting the best education possible.

Educational attainment has improved considerably in the last few years, so that for the first time in decades Newcastle schools now perform above the national average at GCSE level after years languishing at the bottom of the league under Labour. More of our young people have gone on from school into employment and training, or into further and higher education.

The Lib Dem Council has invested in protecting vulnerable children and their families, and protected vital support services, despite challenging budgetary circumstances. Newcastle has developed a well-regarded network of children's centres to support families with younger children.

Under the Liberal Democrats, the City Council has earned Beacon Council status for its work to address the causes of child poverty, and this work will remain a key political priority for the council.
