Lower speeds save lives - the case for changing limits

1 Mar 2019

While speed may not be a major factor in collisions that result in slight injuries, speed is a major factor in more serious accidents.

In a SPACE for Gosforth article 20 mph - the right speed for Gosforth's children they shared some data on the increasing likelihood of a pedestrian or cyclist being killed or seriously injured (KSI) as vehicle speeds increase.

Car Speed All Adults KSI 70 Year Old KSI
20mph 17% 30%
30mph 40% 70%
40mph 80% 90%

Even a few miles per hour difference at 30mph could make a significant difference to the chances of someone's survival, and is negligible in terms of time saved on a journey.
