Lib Dems Win Support for Safer, Quieter Bonfire Night in Newcastle
Newcastle Liberal Democrats have welcomed the council’s move to tackle the disturbance caused by fireworks and are calling for stronger protections for residents, pets and vulnerable people across the city.
On Bonfire Night, a Lib Dem amendment was passed calling for measures to reduce the impact of fireworks on communities. Among the proposals are the introduction of ‘firework-free’ zones in areas where noise is likely to cause the greatest disruption, stronger police patrols in known hotspot areas, and a review of firework-related incidents in Newcastle over the last three years.
The motion also urges the Government to introduce a national ban on the sale of particularly loud fireworks to the public, helping ensure that Bonfire Night can be celebrated safely without unnecessary stress to families, the elderly, and animals.
The Lib Dems remain committed to working with Northumbria Police, community groups, and local residents to ensure that Newcastle’s Bonfire Night celebrations are safe, responsible, and considerate of everyone in the city.
