Cllr Ferguson Responds to Cancelled Advance UK Conference

Responding to todays news that the planned Advance UK conference will not be going ahead at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Saturday, Cllr Colin Ferguson, Leader of the Opposition, said tonight:

“Far right agitators have no place in Newcastle. They do not represent our great city’s values or its people.

“It was the correct decision to cancel Advance UK’s booking in light of public safety concerns arising from their gathering, but their apparent intention to give an opportunity to Tommy Robinson to sow division, spread fear, and encourage hate should put them beyond the pale. That brand of politics should not be acceptable locally or nationally.

“Tonight, there might be residents in our city who are concerned and fearful, unsure how the weekend will go and whether they will be safe. To them, we say: the Liberal Democrats, and all who agree with us across political divides, stand with you and support you, now and long into the future.”
