Why the difference in dates?

Under the India Independence Act of 1947, legal independence of the two new countries came on 15th August, but the last Viceroy Earl Mountbatten of Burma travelled to Karachi for  apublic announcement of the granting of independence to Pakistan on 14th August 1947.
