LICENSING VICTORY FOR HEATON RESIDENTS11.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 8th Aug 2008 HEATON Liberal Democrats have won a licensing victory for local residents. North Heaton councillors Greg Stone, Doreen Huddart and Karen Robinson, together with South Heaton campaigner Henry Gallagher, persuaded the city council to reject an application for an off licence in Addycombe Terrace. The council declined to allow a new store to open, citing concerns over anti-social behaviour and the existing number of off licences in the area. Councillor Greg Stone said: "Many local residents in North and South Heaton expressed concern about this application and we are pleased that our representations have persuaded the licensing committee to reject this bid, which we hope will set a precedent for further applications in the area. "This part of Heaton already suffers from student parties and youth disorder, particularly at nearby Iris Brickfield park, so we are very pleased with the outcome." Heaton Lib Dems are also closely monitoring an application to remove licensing restrictions on the Echo Bar in Chillingham Rd. The bar is seeking to remove its members-only status and allow on-street drinking at tables. Councillor Stone added: "While we generally support efforts to improve the vitality of Chillingham Road, we are concerned that this application may create noise and disturbance to residents on Warton Terrace and other streets close to this establishment."
