CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED TO SAVE POST OFFICE

9.23.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 10th Jun 2008

GREG, KAREN, and DOREEN have been campaigning on behalf of residents to save the Post Office on Newton Road.

The postmaster recently decided to close down his business with only 48 hours notice, causing serious concern to High Heaton residents and particularly elderly people at the Spinney.

The news is a bit worrying as the Government intends to announce its closure programme for post offices in Tyne & Wear on July 1.

We have written to Postwatch and the Royal Mail to express our concerns, and have made representations to encourage other businesses to take over the facility.

The city council owns the premises and is currently carrying out renovation and repairs, but we are encouraged to hear that there have been nine serious expressions of interest in taking over the post office business when the work is complete, and the Royal Mail is being kept closely informed.
