CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED TO SAVE BRUNSWICK POST OFFICE

9.10.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 8th Jul 2008

Local Liberal Democrats are campaigning to stop the closure of Brunswick Village Post Office by the Labour Government.

The branch is among nine in Newcastle are set to be closed by Labour. Residents can sign a petition which is in the village Post Office.

Under Labour, thousands of Post Offices have already closed. Now another 2,500 are to go.

When the Conservatives were in power 3,500 post offices were closed.

The Liberal Democrat plan to save the Post Office network would see £2 billion invested.

Newcastle MP Doug Henderson backed the closure programme in a vote in Parliament.

Councillor Ian Laverick said: "We've already had a great response to our campaign - but we need more if we are going to keep our Post Offices open."
